Belize — Ambergris Caye & the Heart of the Caribbean Flats

Bonefish, Tarpon, Permit — and the Quiet That Lasts

There’s a kind of peace that only exists where water—as far as the eye can see—meets sky. On Ambergris Caye, that peace is a living thing. It rises with the dawn over coral flats that shimmer like molten glass, it drifts through the mangroves at midday, and it settles into the warm air as the sun dips behind distant clouds. Belize doesn’t shout; it invites you to slow down, breathe deep, and listen.

This is what searching for serenity feels like on a saltwater flats fishery.

Ambergris Caye sits at the edge of the Caribbean, a slender island threaded with sandy byways and lapped by turquoise seas. Here, the flats extend outward in infinite gradients—shallow green where bonefish cruise, deeper blues where tarpon wander like ancient sentinels, and edges of broken reef where permit ghost through patch reefs with ghost-like calm.

This is a year-round fishery, tempered by tropical trade winds and seasonal shifts that tease different behaviors from its resident species. The prime window for the Big Threebonefish, tarpon, and permit—often runs from November through late spring and early summer, with April through June offering some of the best chances to encounter the elusive permit. Bonefish, with their lightning speed and unerring agility, provide remarkable action almost every day. Tarpon make their presence known through the seasons, with summer months kindling the largest and most explosive runs.

But this is not a place governed by a schedule. It’s a place where timing is more about feeling—the angle of the sun, the shape of the tide, the lightest wind brushing the water. And those who come here with patience and presence find themselves rewarded again and again.

The Fishery

Stepping onto the casting platform here is like entering a world already in motion.

Bonefish streak along white sand lanes—flash silver in the sun, a blur of motion beneath your feet. They test your focus, your approach, your ability to read water that is at once shallow and deep with possibility.

Tarpon cruise the deeper edges, giants of prehistoric grace. A roll across a flat can send your heart forward in your chest, beckoning you to cast into the blue-green beyond.

And then there’s the permit—the holy grail of flats fishing. They move with uncanny grace, their presence whisper-quiet until the moment they annihilate a fly drifting too close to their feeding lane. Permit days here are earned; they require keen eyes, smooth presentations, and a reverence for the rhythm of the flats.

Every sunrise brings a new mosaic of water and wind. Every cast holds promise.

Beyond the Cast

What makes Belize more than a destination is that the fishing is only one thread in a larger tapestry.

Between days on the water, you’ll wander the sandy streets of San Pedro—fresh ceviche cooling in the shade, conch fritters hot off the fryer, laughter weaving through the market stalls. You’ll stroll along beaches where palms lean toward the sea and sunlight dances in endless reprise.

You may find yourself seeking out hidden cenotes, gliding through mangrove tunnels where birds announce your passage, or simply standing in the shallows as the tide rolls in and out—watching light and shadow play on the ever-changing flats.

It is a place that invites reflection, connection, and a kind of quiet joy that lingers long after the trip ends.

"My first trip with Zach was to San Pedro Belize.

We were a group of eight, each from a different place, but all sharing a love of fishing.

Zach is a kind soul with the heart of a teacher, patient and passionate.

Accommodations were fantastic and spacious, and offered contrast to the rustic charm of San Pedro.

The fishing was epic, and after 18 years, I achieved my first inshore Grand Slam.

For that, I am truly grateful."

My second trip with Zach was an amazing adventure to Costa Rica.

To the southern tip, close to the Panamanian border, we eight enjoyed a Tarpon fishery unlike any I have ever experienced.

Awakened to the call of howler monkeys and toucans,  every day seemed to surpass the last.

I have caught Tarpon before, but never in the numbers nor the rapidity. I literally had to take a moment to regain my strength before making another presentation, as every moment the fly was wet was an invitation to another battle.

I landed seven Tarpon that week with a new personal best of 140. That trip will forever live in my dreams.

Thank you truly Zach."
